DULUTH - A state agency is now taking steps to stop the spread of one of the most destructive tree pests in Lake and Cook Counties.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture says in the last year they've seen an alarming increase of Gypsy Moths in those counties, which has prompted a quarantine.

Officials say the quarantine would limit the movement of objects that have a high risk of carrying gypsy moth eggs, caterpillars and other life stages in order to protect Minnesota forestry services.

"These quarantine regulations are designed to limit the spread,” Minnesota Department of Agriculture Gypsy Moth Program Supervisor Lucia Hunt said. “But they're not designed to be overly burdensome to industry or to residents."

Two public hearings on the quarantine will be held next month:

Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lake County Courthouse as part of the Lake County Board of Commissioners Meeting.

Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Cook County Courthouse as part of the Cook County Board of Commissioners Meeting.
