Wizard of Oz World Record Set in Grand Rapids

PRESS RELEASE

GRAND RAPIDS, Min.  - The year 2014 was a big one for nine year-old Reece Veatch of Ohio because this was the year she made her dream come true and broke a world record.

In June, Reece took part in an event she initiated -- the "largest gathering of persons dressed as Wizard of Oz characters" and in the process nearly tripled the world record.

Now that Guinness World Records has issued the certificate, it's official.

The dream started when Reece Veatch was only seven.

A fan of the Guinness World Record books, she told her mother she wanted to break a record. Shortly after, while visiting The Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, she came up with the idea of gathering the most persons dressed as characters from the film classic, The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland.

After applying to Guinness and joining forces with the Judy Garland Museum, on June 13th, Reece and 1,093 men, women and children smashed the world record.

The previous record, made in England, was 446.

The Guinness attempt, which took place on the 75th anniversary of this much loved film, also served as a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity.

Reece Veatch is certainly a young person who knows how to achieve her goals.

She is looking forward to doing more fundraising of this kind in the future.
