DULUTH - Minnesota could soon join states like Michigan and Iowa in residents getting a recycling deposit.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is proposing a 10 cent recycling incentive for bottles, cans and other beverage containers.
The goal is to increase the recycling rate from 56 percent of trash recycled to 75.
“We know the public is on board in terms of recycling,” said Craig Lincoln, an environmental program coordinator at Western Lake Superior Sanitary District. “With the right types of programs and the right types of incentives we can hit that 75 percent goal.”
If the plan goes through the legislature, it could increase recycling volume by 107,000 tons and create 1,000 jobs throughout the state.
