DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota’s snowmobile trails were supposed to open Monday, but the Department of Natural Resources says they are not ready.

Before snowmobilers can start their engines, the trails need to meet certain conditions.

The ground must be frozen allowing for crossings in wet areas.

The trails must also have about a foot of snow on them for packing and grooming.

The trails should also be cleared of leaves and broken branches.

Landowner permits must also be in place that allow trails on private land.

With 260,000 miles of trails throughout Minnesota, many are anticipating their opening.

“As soon as the snow comes and the clubs have groomed them and then they will be open. Until then, we ask that everyone stay off the trails until they are declared open," said Greg Soreson, director of the Minnesota Snowmobile Association.

The trails should open up once they get six to eight inches of snow.
