DULUTH - The city plans to remove more than 200 trees from 4th street between 6th avenue east and Wallace.

Residents are taking a stand.

Plans for reconstruction on 4th street have residents concerned as many of their trees are in jeopardy.

Sunday afternoon people stapled clothes and messages to the trees in hopes of saving them from being removed.

Folks in the Northland have been told that road construction will be done and the trees roots are affecting the sewer route.

But, residents say the trees have many benefits.

Michael Krepps, 4th Street Resident, said “Part of the charm of this neighborhood is the canopy of trees. The temperature of our house is going to change dramatically in the summer because they provide lovely shade.  I think there's a little barrier between this street and the trees because 4th street is such a busy street.”

They also believe other construction methods can be used without affecting the entire corridor.

Bob Krepps, 4th Street Resident, said, “One of the things we would really like to see the city consider is when they do the replacement that they establish a proper planting site and location that will allow the trees to become better established with deeper roots rather than the surface roots we have right here.”

Residents hope they are able to come to some agreement with the city.

Construction is set for 2016.
