Historic Ely Field Needs New Scoreboard

ELY - A historic field in Ely is hoping to score some new equipment.The Veterans Memorial field was home to the American Legion World Series in the past and more than 120 different teams have played there in just the past three years.Now officials say they need a new scoreboard and some upgrades.American Legion Baseball coach, Tom Coombe said, "It's a very busy place. A place that has become kind of a destination for baseball tournaments and we want to keep it that way and one of those things that we want to enhance or improve is a bigger and better scoreboard."If you want to help out, there's a fundraiser this weekend at Zaveral's bar from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.They'll be selling raffle tickets and burgers for $10.Organizers say they are halfway to their goal of $30,000 and hope the community will help them get the rest of the way.They next event is at the Ely Dairy Queen Dec. 14.
