DULUTH - The City of Duluth is continuing to move forward in trying to keep the Lester Park Golf Course open to the public. Every year the city loses approximately $300,000 operating the course. A few months ago, Duluth opened the door to find a solution on how to reduce the city's debt.Ultimately, no big-time developers wanted to buy up the land, so to keep the course up and running, the city is looking for a management company to take care of up-keep while also investing some money to bring in more people."Our hope has been we can find a way we can keep Lester Park open, but do it in a way that minimizes the losses and maximizes the revenue,” said City of Duluth communication director, Daniel Fanning. “It doesn't appear that it'll mean a complete closure. It doesn't appear that it'll mean a large development." Fanning says there is still potential for some of the holes to close, but the city hopes to keep at least part of the course open. City officials say they should have a final decision on what to do with the course by next month.
