DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - Mining company Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. plans to close its Duluth office as part of a cost-cutting move.
Cliffs employs about 1,850 people with a payroll of $256 million at Minnesota iron ore mines in Silver Bay, Babbitt, Eveleth, Forbes and Hibbing.
The Cleveland-based company says it has no plans to cut workers at the mines.
But after a hedge fund takeover, board shake-up and the appointment in August of a new CEO, cost-cutting has become a priority for Cliffs.
A Cliffs spokeswoman tells the Star Tribune the Duluth office will close by the end of September.
She says the majority of the office's 31 employees will be moved to specific mines in Minnesota or offered jobs in Ohio.
