DULUTH - If you go to their website, it'll say, "Big Daddy's has the best burgers in Duluth," and the owner knows exactly why.
He says it’s the fresh ingredients and extreme portions that keep people coming back for more.
You may know about Big Daddy's Burgers thanks to the cartoon drawing of a jolly man holding a burger.
"Kids will come in and say, 'hey that's big daddy,'" laughed restaurant owner, Dave Gonhue.
Or you may know it thanks to the reputation of those able to stomach obnoxious amounts of food.
"It's just for fun,” Gonhue said. “People usually take their leftovers home."
After working in restaurants for decades, 13 years ago, Big Daddy decided to open up a place of his own and do things his way.
"I don't want to open two or three or four stores. I have no interest in that,” Gonhue said. “I want to just have this one."
He says what sets him apart is the freshly pattied burgers.
"It's just better than the rest of the burgers around town, I think," Gonhue said.
Often times, they’re also the biggest burgers in town.
The walls of Big Daddy's are filled with people who've downed the ‘Belly Buster’ or ‘The Challenge’ which is nearly seven pounds of food.
“For a long time, nobody finished it,” Gonhue said. “There was two or three pictures on the wall.”
He said contests started to attract hundreds and the walls quickly filled up.
“We're just going to keep plugging away, serving good food,” he said.
Big Daddy's is located in Duluth’s Piedmont neighborhood.
They also serve breakfast starting at 6 a.m.
