Gov. Dayton on 50th Anniversary of War on Poverty

DULUTH - Friday marks 50 years of the War on Poverty in Minnesota, and Gov. Mark Dayton spoke out with a visit to Duluth.

Dayton spoke to the Minnesota Community Action Partnership, which a group of 26 non-profit organizations and 11 tribal governments that help low-income families in the state.

It was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Economic Opportunity Act.

Dayton said organizations like MinnCAP are a big reason changes in poverty levels have changed.

"By alleviating the worst effects of poverty they really help stabilize our communities and our society and just, you know they're doing the Lord's work," said Dayton.

Dayton said he wants fewer government programs -- and raising the minimum wage is one good way for people in poverty to be able to work their way into the middle class.
