MADISON, Wis. AP - State wildlife officials are looking to pay southeastern Wisconsin landowners who open up their acres to turkey hunters.
The Department of Natural Resources has launched a pilot program in Washington, Ozaukee, Waukesha, Walworth, Kenosha and Racine counties that calls for the agency to pay landowners $5 per acre if they keep their land open to turkey hunters throughout the spring hunting seasons in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Landowners have until Jan. 31 to sign up for all three seasons.
The agency will give preference to properties that are at least 40 acres and are at least 50 percent forested.
