Bike and Pedestrian Count Kicks Off

DULUTH - A new initiative is taking a closer look at transportation in Duluth.
The 3rd Annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Count kicked off in the Hillside neighborhood Wednesday.
Dozens of volunteers in six different locations documented how many bicycles and pedestrians they saw to see how much of a need there is for bike lanes and crosswalks.
"Certain areas you might not feel comfortable biking to and from work so you might drive your car versus biking because you feel safer,” bike and pedestrian counter Kristen Pelto said. “So if there were bike lanes and if there were safer alternatives then more people could be active."
Information collected from the count will be submitted to MnDOT and the Department of Health for future road and trail projects.
