DULUTH - A couple from Georgia is suing a former Duluth steam operator for more than $50,000 after they said their 2-year-old son was badly burned.

According to the complaint, the couple was visiting Duluth three years ago when their son fell on top of a scalding hot manhole cover at the intersection of Lake Avenue South and Railroad Street.

The couple said the boy severely burned his leg, which required extensive medical treatment and caused permanent damage.

The suit is being filed against Duluth Steam Cooperative Association, which operated the city's steam plant in 2011.

A trial is set for Jan. 7.
