Clayton Jackson McGhie Day of Remembrance in Duluth
By:

DULUTH - More than 100 people reflected on a dark chapter in Duluth's history in an effort to restore peace in the community. On June 15, 1920 Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Isaac McGhie were falsely accused of rape.
They were taken by a mob from the old Duluth jail and then lynched at the intersection where a memorial now stands in their honor.
Event coordinators say it's important to remember what happened so history doesn't repeat itself.
"Prejudice and personal animosity based on racial profiling is the sort of thing that this memorial stands against,” Co-Chair of Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial Board of Directors Rogier Gregoire said. “For people to come out and recognize it is to give us the opportunity to remember what's wonderful about Duluth."
Duluth Mayor Don Ness proclaimed June 16th Clayton Jackson McGhie Day of Remembrance.
