DULUTH - The UMD student who is recovering from severe hypothermia is now breathing on her own, but doctors are preparing for the worst.
Sunday morning, Alyssa Lommel was taken off the ventilator, and now is only using nasal oxygen.
According to her CaringBridge site, she is able to speak but her voice is hoarse and soft.
Her mother writes that Lommel is confused about why her hands are bandaged up. Her family is giving her minimal information on the incident until she can fully understand.
Monday morning, Lommel's care team met, and is preparing for amputations as soon as next week.
They want to wait until she can fully comprehend conversations before she goes in for surgery.
