DULUTH - Thousands of people across the country are joining the Facebook craze and doing their own version of the polar plunge to raise awareness for cancer.

Those who take the plunge post their video on Facebook, then nominate others to do the same.

If you don’t post a video of you taking the plunge then you have to donate $100 to cancer research.

While it's for a good cause, police and the U.S. Coast Guard are urging people not to plunge into ice covered Lake Superior.

"It could cause yourself a lot of harm not only hypothermic and physical, but also hit yourself with a piece of ice. It can cause some damage too," explained U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Gregory Taquin.

Police have seen more than 10 people jumping into the shipping canal and off the walls in Canal Park.

It is illegal to use the canal for swimming.
